" Design, Structure and Properties of Inorganic-Organic Hybrids"

Inorganic-organic hybrid compounds have been investigated in great detail during the past two decades. The impetus for this area was provided by the advent of a new family of compounds, prepared by the clever manipulation of the coordination requirements of the metal ions along with the functionality of the organic, during the late 90’s. This family of compounds has been known variously as coordination polymers (CPs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), metal-organic porous materials (MOPMs) etc. The supra-molecular principles, developed over the years, are being used extensively to provide excellent control in the design and synthesis of such solids. This synthetic approach makes it possible to realize ‘designer solids’ in this area. Our interest has been to understand the formation and investigate the properties of these solids. Our efforts have yielded pillared Kagome layers, Brucite-related layers, body-centered CsCl structures and exhibit interesting magnetic properties. Some of the compounds also act as good Lewis acid catalysts. This talk would highlight some our findings in this area.
