Multimedia signal processing is an area in-between AI , Robotics , and Communications . All these areas need intelligence for fullfilment and the speech and visual recognition are the indispensable component of intelligence. In terms with AI, the intelligence cannot be attained without speech and visual interactions with outside world. That's the role of auditory and visual cortex in human brain. In terms with robotics, a robot which is blind and deaf-mute will be quite uninteresting. In terms with Communications, the communication paths are only highways which must be filled with vehicles called multimedia. Also, speech and vision are the most natural communications constructed with multilayers of different coding stacks, and therefore much more efficient than the artifitial communications.

The advanced signal processing lab deals with the two approaches to the multimedia signals: theory and parallel computation. For the theory, we investigate processing, coding, synthesis, and recognition. For realization, we study parallel architecture and VLSI design.

This lab is very competitive in multimedia fusion and realization in embedded and VLSI systems and business relationship . This area is very promising in the future due to the fast development of AI, Robotics, and Communications.
