Vision System

Human can recognize 3-dimensional space by processing the information of the two eyes organically. The process consists of three part (Binocular Stereo, Motion Estimation, Shape from Shading)

Stereo Vision Chip

* Many computer based systems require 3-D spatial information about their surrounding environment, such as the distance to or the shape of an object.

* The 3-D Vision System is a compact and low cost system that provides a real time reconstruction of 3-D space from a pair of video images.

* This information can then be used by other systems as required.

* Humans receive and use the same type of information from their sense of vision.

PCI based System

PCI based System

* Stereo camera captures a pair of video images.

* Digitized left and right images are input to the stereo matching ASIC.

* ASIC outputs distance information to target system.

* The core of the system is an ASIC for 3-D vision.

* The algorithm is a high performance, concurrent stereo matching algorithm.

* A linear systolic array VLSI architecture to implement the algorithm was designed. It is highly parallel and easily scalable.

* A computer-based prototype system has been developed.

* 6 ASICs (10 PEs each) are mounted on a PCI computer board.

* Can process a pair of 320 by 240 pixel images at 40 frames/s.
