Welcome Message from the Division Head

Welcome to the Division of Advanced Materials Science (AMS), POSTECH! The AMS was launched in December 2008 with a support from the World Class University (WCU) project sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) to establish a world-class research and educational institute in the field of materials science through interdisciplinary research and study. Currently, the AMS has 14 faculty members including 4 distinguished scholars from abroad in the areas of physics, chemistry, and materials science, whose work has been internationally well-recognized.

The AMS primarily focuses on fundamental research for the development of new functional materials and device platforms that may revolutionize current technology in many areas including Information Technology (IT), Biotechnology (BT) and Energy & Environment Technology (EET). Our current research efforts are centered on

  • (1) development of novel nanomaterials with a wide range of application perspectives,
  • (2) fundamental understanding of cross-coupling phenomena in complex materials, and
  • (3) development of device platforms within a framework of ‘revolutionary’ technology.M Interdisciplinary research and study is strongly encouraged.

POSTECH offers state-of-the-art facilities for multidisciplinary research including an advanced synchrotron radiation facility, Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) and National Center for Nanomaterials Technology (NCNT), a national facility for the nanomaterials and device fabrication. Most faculty members are actively involved in synchrotron-radiation research at PAL.

Despite the short history of our university, our strong commitments to teaching and research have made POSTECH the best place in the country for learning, performing research and pursuing successful careers. We believe that the AMS will be a world-leading institute that provides exciting opportunities for graduate study and research at the cutting edge of materials science. Our faculty, staff and students work together to create and disseminate new knowledge and pursue intellectual, as well as personal fulfillment for everyone involved.

If you have any questions regarding the research and educational activities at the AMS, please do not hesitate to contact me or individual faculty members. For further information, please visit our home page, http://ams.postech.ac.kr. I am sure you will find a program that best suits your individual goals at the AMS and we are looking forward to receiving your application.
