Trends in 5G Millimeter-Wave Wireless Networking Research

Abstract

This presentation explains the details of 28 GHz, 38 GHz, and 60 GHz millimeter-wave wireless networking research results. First of all, the embedded prototyping and research results in industry will be presented. After that, the major research challenges in millimeter-wave wirelesss networks will be provided. Moreover, the fundamental link budget calculation precedures with millimeter-wave specific paramters will be provided. Lastly, millimeter-wave frequency sharing study research will be presented in order to justify whether millimeter-wave wireless technologies are suitable for 5G cellular networks or not.

Biography

Joongheon Kim (M'05) has been an assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering with Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea, since 2016. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from Korea University, Seoul, Korea, in 2004 and 2006, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 2014. Before joining USC, he was a research engineer with LG Electronics, Seoul, Korea, from 2006 to 2009. During his Ph.D. research at USC, he was an intern with InterDigital, San Diego, CA, USA, in 2012. He was also a systems engineer with Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, CA, USA, from 2013 to 2016. His current research interests are in the theory, design, and implementation of distributed computing platforms including radio platforms (especially, millimeter-wave radio and medium access technologies), advanced video streaming platforms, and multi-core embedded platforms. He is a Member of the IEEE. He was awarded USC Annenberg Graduate Fellowship with his Ph.D. admission from USC, in 2009.
